FAQ #180

Sending and receiving emails with Outlook 2013

After setting up your email address in the customer login you can work directly with this email address and send and receive emails.

In this article, you will find out how you can set up a new email address within Microsoft Outlook 2013. The setup can either be run in a mostly automated manner, or configured in a manual fashion. Please have your email address and the corresponding password ready for the setup.

Configuring Outlook 2013 automatically

With the Autodiscover function, configuration can be performed in a more or less automated manner. The Autodiscover function is already enabled for you in every STRATO hosting package.

First of all, please launch Outlook 2010 and click on the Start / Add account menu option.

In the subsequent configuration for email setup, enter your name (you may choose any name), your email address, and the corresponding email password:

After entering your data, please click on the Next button. Outlook will now automatically search for the required server settings. During the search, you will receive a notification; please confirm it.

The notification appears because STRATO stores the settings in a central file that cannot be reached via your domain. Your mailbox is automatically set up with encrypted settings. Switching to SSL manually is no longer required.

Setting up an email address manually

As an alternative to the automated setup, the manual setup of a new mailbox in Outlook is possible as well. Start Outlook and click in the menu on File and Add account:

After you have clicked on Add account a new window will open. Now select Manual Configuration or additional server types and confirm with Next:

Now select POP or IMAP in order to set up a POP3 or IMAP mailbox. Users of a Premium mailbox can also choose to set up a Microsoft Exchange account.

Confirm by clicking on the Nextbutton:

Please enter your personal data and the STRATO server data on the following page. Please select the correct account type: POP3 or IMAP.

You can find help for deciding which account type is the right one for you here:
What is IMAP and how can I use it?

Then enter the following server information (optionally, an IPv4 address can be entered):

Posteingangsserver bei POP3pop3.strato.de81.169.145.131
Posteingangsserver bei IMAPimap.strato.de81.169.145.103
Postausgangsserver (SMTP)smtp.strato.de81.169.145.133
BenutzernameIhre vollständige E-Mail-Adresse
KennwortIhr E-Mail Passwort

Then click on Advanced Settings , in order to set the authenticated SMTP access

In the outbox server tab you can configure the authenticated outbox server:

Select here that your outbox server requires authentication and you would like to use the same settings as for the inbox server.

Then click on the Advanced tab:

Now please change the server connection numbers (ports) for the inbox server (POP3) to 995 and for the outbox server (SMTP) to 465.

Also place a check mark at Server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) and select SSL as the connection type..

Then confirm your entries by clicking on OK:

In order to be certain that your settings are also correct and you have correctly configured the mailbox, please click on Test account settings:

As soon as Outlook 2013 successfully registers with the POP3/IMAP Server and a test message was delivered, two green check marks will appear:

If there is an error notification at this point, an error may have slipped in while entering your password or email address. Please check all settings and try it again.

If the POP3/IMAP registration was successful, but you receive an error notification when attempting to send an email, this may be due to the fact that the SMTP Authentication (under Advanced Settings Beachte auch Outbox Server) was not activated. Please also make sure that the encrypted SSL port 465is enabled for the delivery of emails in your router/firewall.

As soon as Outlook 2013 successfully registers with the POP3/IMAP Server and a test message was delivered, two green check marks will appear:

After the configuration is finished, you can use your email account in Outlook 2013.
